Cub Scouts? Really?

Recently I was asked to be an assistant den leader for Hunter’s Bear den. I don’t know how it happened, but I accepted and I have the shirt to prove it. We just received six new boys and that boosts our numbers up to eight. At the last den meeting we discussed finances, and figured out how much it costs to feed a family (“Stop poking that… Now divide the total you spent on your meal by the number of … hey, are you listening?… people in your family.”), how to look for a new car (“I want the pickup truck” “How many people are in your family?” “Five.” “That would only work if some of you rode in the back.” “Okay!”), and played “Monopoly Junior” to practice our entrepreneurial skills (“But I wanted to be green!”.)

At the last pack meeting we had a Raingutter Regatta where the boys raced their wooden boats; And at our next pack meeting we will have the infamous Pinewood Derby. Hunter has a plan for making an awesome car. So now I have figured out the difference between a den meeting and a pack meeting, and I mostly understand how the Achievements work. The Arrow points and Belt loops are still a bit mysterious, but with the help of MaryAnne the seasoned scout leader, I should be up to speed soon.

Way to go Amy, you look so cute in your uniform! How fun you get to do this with Hunter, I’m sure he loves it. And what a handsome guy he is too!

I don’t know that I ever thought I would see the day that you would wear a boy scout shirt! I love it. You look FABULOUS darling! I am glad that you are able to do this with Hunter. You are a great Mom and leader! Thanks for putting a smile on my face!

Here’s a pinewood derby tip that we talked about in Physics:

Place your weights at the rear of your car, not the front. This means that the weights will start slightly higher, giving them more time to fall and gain momentum. This equates to slightly higher speeds.

Another cool thing I saw was one kid shaved his car down to be REALLY thin and then put only three wheels on it; two on one side and one in the middle on the other. This reduces the friction of the wheels and gives you higher speeds.

I’m not sure of the rules of YOUR pinewood derby but I though Hunter would like some tips.

This will be a super fun experience for you and Hunter. I loved being involved when my 5 sons were young. Everyone of them made Queen’s Scout (equiv of Eagle)! It was a fun time in their lives and mine too.

You’ll do great Amy! I think it’s going to take me a while to figure out scouting also. I can never even remember what level Josh is at. Good luck!
