Amy’s Epiphany

BolognaThe other day, Amy called me at work a little after lunchtime. She was telling me about her lunch with the kids. She made them bologna and cheese sandwiches and was a bit surprised about how much the kids liked them. She said she was thinking about why kids seem to like bologna so much when it came to her that “bologna is just flat hot dogs.”

This realization of Amy’s really made me laugh. It also made me want to have a bologna sandwich. I think it would make a great ad campaign for Oscar Mayer, “Bologna – It’s Just Flat Hot Dogs.”

I only like my bologna sandwich with crushed up potato chips on top….

I haven’t bought bologna for ten years because I never really liked it. Hunter had a friend at school bring in sandwiches as a birthday treat for the class. He came home and told me that it was the best sandwich he had ever had, so I went out and bought it for him the next day. He and Emma tore through that package pretty quickly, and he insisted that I taste it, thus my great epiphany. I think I am living proof that the blonde stereotype is false. 😉

Several years ago I also had a mayo epiphany after turning up my nose at it since childhood. I was the kid scraping off my hamburger with my napkin, and refusing to try potato salad because it’s covered in that nasty mayonnaise. A couple of years after we were married, Rob and I went through a drive through at McDonalds and ordered chicken sandwiches . I took a few bites and said, “I wonder what kind of sauce they put on this, it’s really good.” Rob chuckled and said, “Amy, that’s mayonnaise!” Oh, I guess I do like it.

I don’t think my kids have ever had bologna before. I haven’t had it in 20 years. My kids would eat it if they knew it was a flat hotdog, on second thought my kids eat almost anything.

That’s really funny, it really is just a flat hot dog pretty much. A while ago, a guy I work with kept bringing in olive loaf sandwhiches. We teased him a bit about them, but one day I got curious and asked him what olive loaf tasted like, and he told me “it’s like balogna with green olives in it…”.

I like balogna, and I like green olives, so I decided that I should at least try it once in my life to see if I was missing out on something great. I had Mel buy a package of some olive loaf, and then one day she brought it for lunch one day. All I can say is it does not taste like balogna with olives. It’s some different spiced meat flavor that took a bit to get used to. It’s not horrible, but it’s not great either. We pretty much had that one sandwhich, and then had to throw the rest of the olive loaf away a month later. It was worth a try I guess.
