Local Fire
Last night around 6 pm a large fire started about 8 miles from our house by what is now believed to be arson. We received a call shortly after that to be ready in case there were any necessary evacuations. The church stake leaders were immediately communicating via a ham radio network and checking in on high risk members. It’s so nice to have such an organized system for safety.
These are pictures I took this morning around 9:00 from our front yard. The sky is an ominous orange, I didn’t do any touch ups to these photos. I was in Costa Mesa this morning and returned around 11:30 to find that things are still just as smoky and dim. To read up on us check out this ABC story. You can also see another guy’s cool pictures here on flickr.
Bob called to tell me that there was ash residue in his backyard and loads of smoke in the sky. He had mowed the lawn in the morning and there was nothing, but early afternoon they could tell it had really moved. I haven’t heard if they have received an evacuation warning so far. Keep safe, I know you’re prepared.
P.S. Waiting to hear what the prognosis was/is on your broken down hockey event car.
Ugh!!! That looks icky! Nothing like smelling like you’re camping when you are in the city, eh? I know that we all feel better knowing that you have the church there, should the situation worsen or come even closer to home. Thanks for posting an update.
I was thinking about you guys all day. It’s nice to hear you are all well. Are the winds a problem in your area, too?
The winds have been gusting here for the last few days. It’s pretty typical to get these Santa Ana winds through December, but the lack of rain and heat make it more dangerous. Today the winds seem calmer, but at 9:00am it was already 85 degrees!!
And we’re still working on getting the car diagnosed. It all seemed to start from one of the timing belts that snapped and messed up the other two belts and some other stuff as it was flapping around. After spending $1200 at the first mechanic it was still rattling and driving pretty rough. So today it’s in with our regular mechanic and hopefully they will be able to fix the problem without too much more $. If not, we may be in the market for a new car. But we just hate to do that since this one is paid off.
I watched the special on T.V. last night it is so horrible. I am glad you are safe. I hope it stays that way. I am sorry about the car that stinks. I really dislike car troubles. It always seems to cost a fortune.
Amy…are you all still safe?…I’ve been watching the news & thinking about your family! And, sorry about the car troubles…that stinks!!!
