Barbie on Money Management

It’s true, I am a consumer of Barbie products. We have a house full of Barbies and their accessories, but I was shocked when I saw this commercial for the Barbie Shopping Boutique. Not exactly the best way to teach your kids about financial responsibility: “You Never run out of money!”
On a related note, Nana is once again the cover article for Meridian Magazine (!!) with her article titled Teaching Children to Live Within Their Means. Good stuff in there!
Amy, this is so funny, i just saw this commercial this afternoon, and I too was completely disgusted with the whole “Cash or Credit” thing where the little girls are basically taught “Credit” all the way. Not going on any of my kids gift lists I can tell you that for sure! But we too are total Barbie consumers here, both of my littlest girls love her. Ciel never did though, so this is new for me with my girls, although I was obsessed with Barbies when I was younger, for a very long time!
I saw that commercial and thought it sounded like a great toy too until you never run out of money.
When we were little I remember us telling my mom she had money because she could write a check. Obviously not understanding how money works. I like the idea of teaching them financial responsibility at a young age. I have a mommy store with mommy dollars. My kids are beginning to understand that they have to work for $. I am going to do a post about my mommy store.
I love Barbies still. I love that Estee wants to be princess Geniveve. I played Barbies for the longest time. I am excited for Estee to want them and Love them like I have. I am crossing my fingers that she will anyway. I saw the most beautiful October Birthday Barbie. Estee and I need it.
Your mom’s article was a great read, and one I will be taking a lot from to use with my own children, good stuff! And I loved the quote from Coco Chanel, it’s so true.
That commercial is awful!!! Obviously auntie J is no longer doing their account. We think our world is in trouble now and we were raised to work for our money….I really have noticed the trend to just be your child’s friend by buying them what they want and now it is impossible to find a high school kid to mow the lawn or help clean the house….very scarey
I see nothing wrong with that. 😉
My little bros have all the latest gadgets and I think it is crazy. I didn’t have everything I wanted growing up but they sure do. I like my kids working hard for their stuff and NOT having everything that they want.My borthers get calls and texts constantly. I dont know why they cant go 2 hours w/o talking to their friends. Doesn’t seem healthy.
