All Over But the Crying
We moved here almost three years ago, so it seems about right that we have another life change now. Rob gave notice yesterday at the firm and accepted a corporate counsel position with a large company in San Diego.
This is something we have been thinking about for a while. With the available work dwindling at work and billable hours dropping dramatically, we felt like it was time to start looking around. Although the firm has been a great place, everything in his department was slow, and even though there was never an obvious threat of layoffs, we knew that they wouldn’t continue forever paying his salary when his billing was so low. After all, it is business.
There are not a lot of choices for in-house positions, and the competition for each position is only growing. So as much as I wanted to focus our search to only Orange County it just wasn’t possible. The plan for now is to have Rob commute to San Diego while we figure out when and if to move our family. I think he is more set on finding a new home in north SD county, but I am still in denial and hoping that the commute and hours will work for us to stay where we are.
With the decision made and notice given I feel relieved to be done worrying about if the axe might fall. So now I teeter between gratitude for a great job (which are hard to come by these days), and sadness that it will likely mean uprooting and starting over.
UPDATE: Part of the offer package we received today requires that we move down to North San Diego County within a month. I am not happy about it at all, and it makes me nervous that they want him to be so close so quickly, but it is a great job and one that we know he should take. So if you know anything about the area, please let me know your opinions. Thanks!
Wow – a total surprise to me. I think that changes are usually pretty exciting. I am sure that all will go well in the coming months.
I’m excited that things are working out, but bummed it means you might be leaving.
You are not allowed to move away! I really hope that it works out for you to stay, but of course you have to do what is best for your family. You have such a great family, and it would be so sad to see you go. Congrats to Rob on the new position–that is great news.
Oh, Amy! Crazy stuff. I hope everything works out for your good.
Wow, this is big news! Congrats on a new job though–we understand the dilemma of dwindling hours . . .
If you do end up considering a move and have questions about North SD let me know. I grew up there and all of my family is still there.
Good luck!
Wow! This is a shock. I am glad he found a good job, though. I hope you don’t have to move but if you do, I have heard good things about San Diego. Hope you weather the commute well.
Moving is never fun, but a new job is good news!
My goodness…never a dull moment in your family, eh. Good luck with your move!
Yay for the new job! And I hope the moving part goes extra smoothly, especially for you Amy. Moving is never easy, but at least it’s also never boring.
I am SO Happy for you. I wish we were there to help I know it is a HUGE job.
Wow..who knew they would require moving to the vicinity within a month! Not part of the plan…eeek!
Amy,
You should do what’s best for your family. I miss you so much and you are such a great friend and you and Rob have such a wonderful family. It really doesn’t matter where you live as long as you have each other and the gospel. I know you will make new friends and have new great opportunities. You are wonderful and you guys will be great. I hope this helps.
San Diego is beautiful and you’ll be so close to a temple… One month!!??? I wouldn’t be happy about THAT timeline at all! Hang in there. There is a very big light at the end of your tunnel :o)
